The 34 talents

The talent test is a comprehensive scientific and well documented tool based on Gallup International and Marcus Birmingham 25 + years of research in talents. The 34 talents are expressions for potential – This means they are areas, where you will be able to develop yourself quicker.

Talent is something you are born with, which is subsequently shaped in the younger years. Some Talents become activated and strengthened. Other talents are not activated and almost disappear. Some neurologists think that you are born with around 20 of the 34 talents, but after the first 15-25 years, there are only 3-10 of the talents that are active. From here, one or three talents will be very noticable. This is in part because the brain does not have enough capacity for all of the 20 talents, and therefore the brain removes/tones down the talents that are used the least. In this way the strong talents have “plenty of power”.

The good thing about the talents is that the brain becomes better and better at using the talents that you already have now. It is important to understand, that not all talents are equally visible in daily life, especially if they aren’t used in the workplace. Success is created through the use of the most significant talents, and by stearing away from using the least significant talents.

The 4 action patterns

The 34 talents are seperated into 4 action patterns that describe how the talents are converted into leadership, leadership ourselves or others. The 4 categories each represent a thought pattern. It is important to keep in mind that talents are not isolated. The talents mutually affect each other. Therefore, there can be individual things in the description of talents that you cannot recognize. For example the achieving talent can be so goal-oriented that it will affect others, but if the person is also relating, this will often not be the case. You will find a short description of the 34 talents at the bottom of the page.

3 examples of dimensions

The time dimension

The time dimension shows how one orients themselves when there is a need for solving a new problem. Where do you go to find the knowledge one needs – through past experiences, through today’s insight or through the future possibilities?

The hardness dimension

The hardness dimension shows the balance between the soft and hard approach to a problem. The hardness dimension shows the talents in to opposite poles, whether they are percieved as being soft – humane and open, or as hard – logical and process oriented.

The stress dimension

The stress dimension shows what type of stress your talents are primed for. The stress dimension shows what type of stress that you will easily acquire as a result of the behavior the top talents create.

Interpretation of the talents

Dimensions are a “set of glasses” we put over the talents to interpret these in different situations. It is through this that we can put the talents into play in relation to specific work or career related development points. We see and read the talents with a specific goal in mind. In the same way that we seperate litterature into fiction and non fiction. Different categories makes it quicker and easier to understand, interpret and put the talents into play.

The different pictures we make of the dimensions, should be seen as the sum of exactly the top talents that you have, and not the individual talent, but how they affect each other. The dimensions are well suited to describe how the individual talent affects the behavior you show when you do something special. How you work in teams or how you are motivated – just to mention 2 examples of dimensions.
